STEP 4: Finish

Go over the letter with colored pencils and add shadows and a final stroke of yellow.

Tip

Place art on paper under a reading lamp to quicken drying times.

The One System

With color, sometimes what works on paper doesn’t work on the walls. With walls, usually the paint is opaque, and on paper it’s mostly transparent. But this simple system has always helped me decide what colors to use and how to incorporate them. I call it the 1 system: 1 above, 1 below, 1 to unify it, 1 to set it off.

Here’s how it works.

1. Choose a base color. This is your primary fill color.

2. Pick one color “above” it, a darker value.

3. Pick one color “below” it, a lighter value.

4. Choose a color that will tie the three together, a unifying color.

5. Look at those four colors as a whole and pick a color to set those off in outline.

Each element and color choice is based on the previous step. So your fills will go in one direction, your outline in another, then the glow is based on the previous outline and fills, then the whole element is placed on a proper background.
